Mission and discoveries

Voyager 2 launched on 20 August 1977, before Voyager 1. A rare alignment of the planets enabled gravity assists from Jupiter through Saturn and Uranus to Neptune.

The Uranus flyby in January 1986 and Neptune flyby in August 1989 remain the only close-up explorations of those worlds. The spacecraft discovered moons, rings and dynamic atmospheric features. It crossed the heliopause on 5 November 2018.

Current status

As of 11 August 2026, CRS, MAG and PWS remain active. In August 2026 NASA announced that a power adjustment known as the “Big Bang” extended operation of these instruments by at least another year.

Why Voyager 2 is unique

Its route produced the only in-situ data from the vicinity of Uranus and Neptune. It also crossed the heliopause in a different direction from Voyager 1, providing measurements of the heliosphere’s boundary at two locations.
