Mission and discoveries
Voyager 1 launched on 5 September 1977. Its Jupiter flyby helped confirm active volcanism on Io; at Saturn it studied the planet, its rings and Titan. The Titan encounter sent it out of the plane of the planets.
On 14 February 1990, from roughly 6 billion kilometres away, it recorded the “Family Portrait” series, including the image of Earth known as the Pale Blue Dot. It crossed the heliopause on 25 August 2012.
Current status
As of 11 August 2026, NASA lists the MAG magnetometer and PWS plasma-wave instrument as active. LECP was switched off on 17 April 2026 to conserve power. The status is dated and sourced rather than automatically synchronised.
Design
The spacecraft communicates through a 3.7-metre high-gain antenna. Radioisotope thermoelectric generators provide power; as their output declines, the team gradually switches off heaters and science instruments.
